5 Things I'll Miss About Afognak Wilderness Lodge

I'm leaving the island tomorrow (if the weather cooperates- crossing fingers) and though I'm ready leave, I really appreciate this place and the experiences that I had here!

1. All the activity- there's people upstairs, downstairs, in the shop, in the processing room, on the porch, at Shannon's, at the new lodge, in their cabins, on the boats, etc, etc, etc. I never really felt too isolated out here, even though I haven't seen a grocery store or a car in 4 months, because there is SO much going on all the time! It's fun! It's like when you're staying at a busy camping location, specifically beach camping, and there's people and activities going on all around you!

2. The routine- as I was doing dinner clean up tonight I thought about how much I love knowing exactly what I need to be doing during the day! It's fun to have a routine and get faster and better at it the more I do it!

3. Living right on the ocean (bay type thing-forgot the name), seeing wildlife all the time, and being surrounded by beautiful majestic looking trees. I've loved that part of being here!

4. Having my own room- I'm going back to sleeping with my baby brother (which is totally okay with me because I love him to pieces) and then I'm going off to Europe where I'll be bunking with other college students for a month, so it's been nice to have this time with my own room, my own space to be alone!

5. Talking to Manny and Shannon- We have great times together! Those are the two people I spend most of my time with - besides Nadia, when she was here working with me, and Corseina, before Nadia got here. Manny and Shannon are really fun to be around and we laugh a lot! I never thought I'd be good friends with a 38 year old guy and a 70 year old woman (besides my grandparents of course) but here I am having a jolly good old time with them, haha!

6. I just have to add a sixth one- serving the guests. I've gotten more comfortable with attending to their needs and serving them. The first week I was here, I made Corseina do it because I felt so shy and uncomfortable serving them their food and then picking up their plates when they were finished. Now that just seems ridiculous to me that I would be scared of that! I feel very comfortable doing it now and it's even kind of fun! I like talking to the guests and making sure they're happy!

7. Oh man, the appreciation for this place just keeps flowin! I also appreciate the random little adventures that I've been able to have, like reading in the moonlight on a cliff, four wheeling whenever I want to, kayaking, going to Russian Island, and most recently, going over to this sailboat that's in our harbor, with Shannon. A couple from England has been sailing around the world for the past 5 years and decided to take a pit stop in our harbor. Luke, Shannon's son, invited them over the night previously, so they invited us over for a little snack on their sailboat the next day! Josh took Shannon and I over to the sailboat and we said, "We're only going to stay for 15 minutes," but it quickly turned into 2 hours! The British couple had a lot to talk about and we sure did too! They served us crackers and a nice rice dish. Both the treats seemed very British. The boat was quaint, the conversation was entertaining and interesting, and we had a good time. I'm grateful for all of the eye opening experiences I've had since I've been here. My view of the world and of the people on it has definitely been altered and widened for the better!
